About Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi sits at the south-eastern tip of Rameswaram island, about 20 km from the town. It was once a busy port town with a railway station and a ferry to Sri Lanka, until a cyclone in December 1964 destroyed it. Today, the broken walls of the old church, the railway station and other buildings stand among the sand dunes and fishermen's huts.

A road now runs past the ruins to Arichal Munai, the land's end, where sea lies on both sides and sandbars stretch towards Sri Lanka. It is one of the most unusual drives in India, with open water on the left and right, but it is exposed and remote, so plan the trip in daylight and treat the sea with care.
