About the Pamban Bridge
The Pamban bridges cross the sea channel between Mandapam on the mainland and Pamban on Rameswaram island. The new Pamban rail bridge, opened in April 2025, is about 2 km long and is India's first vertical-lift sea bridge: its central span rises straight up to let boats pass. It replaced the old rail bridge from 1914, which closed to trains in 2022 and is now being dismantled.
Alongside runs the Pamban road bridge, which is how most visitors reach the island. The view from the road bridge over the turquoise water, the fishing boats and the rail bridge running just beside it is one of the most photographed sights in Tamil Nadu.
