Best time to visit Ranchi
There are two good answers for Ranchi, depending on what you came for. For comfort, go in winter. For the waterfalls at full strength, go just after the monsoon.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Warm in October and March, cool and mostly dry from November to February — the comfortable peak season, with crisp mornings and evenings.
Pack: light layers with a jacket or shawl for early mornings and after dark.

Apr – Jun
Very hot and dry, often 40 °C+ by midday — the off-season on the plains. Best explored at dawn and dusk, resting through the afternoon.
Pack: loose light cottons, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water.

Jul – Sep
Warm and humid with on-and-off showers that cool the air and green the gardens — rain rarely lasts all day.
Pack: a compact umbrella or light rain shell, quick-dry clothes and grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →October to February: the easy months
Days are clear and mild, and the hundreds of steps at Hundru, Jonha and Dassam feel manageable. December and January mornings are cold on the plateau, so pack a jacket. This is also picnic season: Christmas, New Year and weekends in January fill the waterfall car parks with local groups. Go on a weekday if you can.
August to October: the falls at their fullest
The monsoon fills every river off the plateau, and by late August the falls are loud and wide. September into early October is the sweet spot — the heaviest rain has usually passed, but the water is still high. The risk is higher too. Steps are slippery, spray soaks everything, and the pools are at their most dangerous. Stay well back from the water.
July: wet and green
Rain is frequent and sometimes heavy. Roads to the falls can be muddy, and the site staff may close viewpoints or stop visitors going down after heavy rain. It is a good time for greenery and for rugra, the forest mushroom, but not for a tight itinerary.
March to June: hot afternoons
March is still pleasant, and Sarhul usually falls in late March or April. By May, midday is hot and the falls are low, with some reduced to thin streams. If you come now, climb early and rest through the afternoon.
The festival calendar
- Sarhul (March–April): Ranchi's biggest tribal festival, with processions through the city.
- Rath Yatra (June–July): the Jagannathpur chariot festival and fair.
- Karma (August–September): a harvest festival of dance and song in villages.
- Durga Puja (September–October): large pandals across the city.
- Chhath (October–November): offerings at ponds and lakes at sunrise and sunset.

Our pick
Late October or November: the falls are still running well, the air is cool, and the holiday crowds have not yet arrived.
