About Chandragiri Hill

Chandragiri is the smaller of Shravanabelagola's two hills, facing Vindhyagiri across the town's pond. According to Jain tradition, the monk Bhadrabahu came here with his disciples, including Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, who is said to have ended his life here by the Jain practice of fasting. A cave on the hill is linked to Bhadrabahu.

The top of the hill holds a walled group of old basadis, including Chandragupta Basadi and Chavundaraya Basadi, and the rocks around them carry hundreds of old inscriptions and memorial stones. The climb is only about 200 steps, far easier than Vindhyagiri, and the hill is usually much quieter.
