About the Gomateshwara Statue

The Gomateshwara statue on top of Vindhyagiri shows Bahubali, a revered figure in Jainism, standing in deep meditation. It is about 17 metres (57 feet) tall and was carved from a single block of granite in the late 10th century, commissioned by Chavundaraya, a minister of the Western Ganga kings. Vines are carved climbing up his legs and arms, a sign of how long he stood still in meditation.

It is one of the largest monolithic statues in the world and the heart of Shravanabelagola. Pilgrims climb around 600 rock-cut steps to reach it, barefoot. About once every 12 years the statue is anointed in the Mahamastakabhisheka, one of the largest Jain gatherings anywhere.
