Local tips

Start at opening time, when the rock is still cool.

Leave your shoes at the stand at the base and climb barefoot or in socks.

Stop on the upper steps for the best view of the pond and the town.

Use the railings on the steepest sections, especially after rain.

Carry water and a cap, as there is no shade on the rock.

Palanquins carried by porters are usually available for those who cannot climb.

Walk down slowly, as the steps are steep going down too.

About Vindhyagiri Hill

Vindhyagiri is the taller of Shravanabelagola's two hills, a bare granite rock with the Gomateshwara (Bahubali) statue and its temple at the top. A long line of steps is cut straight into the rock face, and the climb of around 600 steps is part of the pilgrimage.

On the way up you pass small shrines and old inscriptions, and the view opens out over the town, the white pond that names Shravanabelagola, and Chandragiri hill opposite. The climb is steep but short, and the hill is at its best early in the morning.
