About the Sharadamba Temple
The Sharadamba temple is the main temple of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, the matha that tradition says Adi Shankaracharya founded as the first of his four mathas. It is dedicated to Goddess Sharada, the goddess of learning, and stands on the bank of the Tunga next to the Vidyashankara temple.
The temple is busy with devotees through the day, and it is the centre of the Navaratri festival, when the goddess is decorated in a different form each day. The Peetham also serves a free prasadam meal to visitors in its dining hall. Since 2024, the temple asks visitors to wear traditional Indian dress.
