About the Vidyashankara Temple

The Vidyashankara temple stands next to the Sharadamba temple in Sringeri. It was built in 1338 by Vidyaranya, a head of the Sharada Peetham, in memory of his teacher Vidyashankara. The temple is made entirely of stone and mixes Hoysala and Dravidian styles, with carvings of gods, animals and stories on every outer wall.

Its most famous feature is the hall of twelve pillars, each marked with a sign of the zodiac. The pillars are placed so that the sun's rays fall on them in the order of the twelve solar months. The temple sits on a raised platform in an open courtyard, which makes it easy to walk around and see the carvings from every side.
