Best time to visit Tawang
The best months for Tawang are usually March to May and late September to November, when roads are open and the skies are clearest. Winter brings snow and very cold nights, and the monsoon brings landslides on the road up.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
October and November are clear, crisp and dry — the best mountain views of the year; December to February turns cold, with snow on the higher ground, enough in places to close roads.
Pack: warm layers and a jacket for October–November; thermals, gloves and a woollen cap from December.
Shines now: Sela Pass
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Shines now: Sela Pass
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Shines now: Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar)
Plan a monsoon day →March to May: spring
Snow still lies at Sela Pass in March and April, and the lakes are often frozen, which is what many people come to photograph. Rhododendrons bloom along the road in spring. Days in town are cool and pleasant; nights still drop close to freezing. The permit route to Sangetsar and Bum La can close after fresh snow, so keep a spare day.
June to August: monsoon
This is the hardest season. Rain on the long road up from Assam brings landslides and roadblocks, and a six-hour stretch can become a twelve-hour one. Cloud hides the peaks most afternoons. Tawang itself is green and quiet, and hotels are easier to book, but only travel now if your dates are flexible.
September to November: autumn
After the rains, the air clears and views are at their longest. October is the favourite month for many visitors. The Tawang Festival, a tourism and culture event, is usually held in late October or early November. Nights get properly cold by November.
December to February: winter
Heavy snow is likely at Sela and possible in town. Before 2024, snow could close the pass road and cut Tawang off. The Sela Tunnel now keeps the main route open through most of winter, though the old road over the pass, where the lake viewpoint is, may still shut after heavy falls. Torgya, the monastery's masked-dance festival, usually falls in January, and Losar often lands in February. Pack serious cold-weather gear.
A few planning notes
Allow time for acclimatisation: a night in Dirang or Bomdila on the way up makes a real difference. Book rooms early for October and for festival weeks. Check road conditions on the day you drive, even in good seasons. See what to wear in Tawang for kit by season.
Questions
Tawang — FAQ
Is Tawang worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you pack for real cold. Snow at Sela and a quiet town are the rewards, and the Sela Tunnel has made the road far more reliable. The pass-top viewpoint and the high lakes may close after heavy snow.
When will I see snow in Tawang?
Most reliably from December to April at Sela Pass and on the road to the lakes. Snow in Tawang town itself is less certain and usually falls in mid-winter.
Should I avoid Tawang in the monsoon?
If your dates are fixed, yes. Landslides on the road from Assam are common from June to September. If you are flexible, the town is green and uncrowded.
