Local tips

Apply for the army-endorsed permit a day ahead through your hotel or taxi driver in Tawang.

Carry the permit, your photo ID and copies, as they are checked at several posts.

Do not photograph army posts, vehicles or soldiers on the way.

Start early, as the round trip on the rough road takes most of the day.

Pack snacks and water; there are very few places to buy food on this route.

Wear your warmest layers and sunglasses, since the lake sits at about 3,700 metres.

Ask your driver whether snow has closed the road before you set off.

A lake made by an earthquake

Sangetsar Tso sits at about 3,700 metres, north of Tawang and not far from the border. An earthquake sent rock and trees crashing into the valley, damming the stream and drowning the forest. The dead trunks still stand in the water, which is what makes it so strange to look at. It picked up the name Madhuri Lake after a song for the film Koyla was shot here with Madhuri Dixit.

The permit

This is the one place in Tawang that needs real planning. The lake lies in an army-controlled area, and on top of your Inner Line Permit you need a separate permit issued through the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang and endorsed by the army. It is usually valid for one day and is given to Indian citizens only; foreign nationals are not allowed. Local taxi drivers and hotels know the process and often handle the paperwork if you give them ID and photos a day ahead.

The journey

The drive is roughly 40 km each way on a rough, high road, often combined with Bum La Pass. It takes most of a day. You pass high lakes such as Pankang Teng Tso and army posts along the way. The army runs a small café at the lake. Snow can close the road for days in winter and spring.

Getting the photograph

Walk the path along the shore until the dead trunks line up in front of the far ridge. Still mornings give the clearest reflections.

Visiting well

Carry your permit and ID at all times, do not photograph army posts, and follow instructions at checkpoints. Take snacks, water and warm layers. See also Sela Pass.
