Good to know

Local tips

Ask your driver for the Jang turning, as the falls are a short way off the main road.

Plan it as a stop on the drive between Sela Pass and Tawang rather than a separate trip.

Visit between August and October for the strongest flow.

Wear shoes with grip, as the path gets wet and slippery from the spray.

Keep your camera covered near the pool, since the spray reaches a long way.

Stay behind the railings and away from the edge of the plunge pool.

Take your litter with you; there are few bins here.

A tall drop near Jang

Nuranang Falls, also called Jang Falls, plunges about 100 metres off a cliff near the village of Jang, on the road between Sela Pass and Tawang. The Nuranang river rises near Sela and runs down to join the Tawang Chu. The water falls as a single white column into a pool of spray, and on sunny mornings a rainbow often hangs in the mist.

Getting there

The falls sit a short way off the main road near Jang, roughly 40 km before Tawang. A side road leads down to a small hydro power station, and from there a short path reaches the viewpoint. Most people stop on the drive up or down, and it takes about an hour. Your driver will know the turning.

When it looks best

The falls are at their fullest from late monsoon into autumn, roughly August to October. In winter the flow drops and the edges can freeze, which has its own look. After heavy rain the path can be muddy and slippery.

Getting the photograph

The main viewpoint gives the full height of the drop. Go closer and the spray soaks everything, so protect your camera. A slow shutter on a steady rock smooths the water.

Visiting well

Stay behind the railings; the rocks near the pool are wet and the current is strong. Litter is a problem at popular stops, so take yours with you. Combine the falls with the Jaswantgarh war memorial and Sela Pass on the same stretch of road.
