December to February
This is the most comfortable time of year, with dry, sunny days and cooler mornings. It is ideal for long visits to the Big Temple and day trips to other Chola temples. January is busy with Pongal and the Thyagaraja Aradhana.
March
The heat starts to build, but mornings and evenings are still fine for sightseeing. Crowds are smaller than in January.
April to June
These are the hottest months, and May is usually the peak. The temple floor gets very hot, so sightsee early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and spend the middle of the day in the palace galleries or indoors.
July to September
It stays hot, with only occasional showers, because the southwest monsoon brings little rain to this side of Tamil Nadu. Crowds are low, and the delta fields are often green.
October and November
The northeast monsoon brings the heaviest rain of the year, sometimes with cyclone warnings on the coast. Check the weather forecast before you travel. Rains can ease by December.
When Is Thanjavur Most Crowded?
Thanjavur is busiest in December and January, around Pongal in mid-January and on long weekends and school holidays. The Big Temple is also crowded on festival days, such as the celebration of Raja Raja Chola's birth star, usually in October or November.
For a quieter trip, visit on weekdays, arrive at the Big Temple when it opens and avoid the main festival dates.
