About Brihadeeswarar Temple

The Brihadeeswarar Temple, known locally as the Big Temple or Peruvudaiyar Kovil, was built by the Chola king Raja Raja Chola I and finished around 1010 CE. Its granite tower rises about 66 m above the sanctum and is covered in carvings, while a huge Nandi carved from a single stone faces the shrine. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples.

More than a thousand years later, it is still an active Shiva temple. The wide courtyard, the long pillared corridor lined with lingas and the carved gateways are open to all visitors. Come early in the morning for quiet and cooler stone, or in the late afternoon, when the tower turns golden and families gather in the courtyard.
