About Schwartz Church
Schwartz Church, also known as Christ Church, stands near Sivaganga Park, a short walk from the Brihadeeswarar Temple. It was built in 1779 in honour of Christian Friedrich Schwartz, a Danish mission priest who was tutor and guardian to the young Maratha prince Serfoji, later Serfoji II.
Inside is a white marble sculpture by the English sculptor John Flaxman, installed in the early 19th century. It shows Schwartz on his deathbed, blessing Serfoji. The church is still in use and much quieter than the temple nearby, which makes it a calm place to rest and take photos.
