About Thanjavur Maratha Palace
The Thanjavur Palace was begun by the Nayak rulers in the 16th century and later extended by the Maratha kings, who ruled Thanjavur until the 19th century. The large complex in the old town has courtyards, tall towers, a durbar hall with painted ceilings and arches, and the Sangeetha Mahal, a music hall built for good acoustics.
The palace also houses the Thanjavur Art Gallery, the Saraswathi Mahal Library and a small royal museum, so you can see most of Thanjavur's heritage in one place. Parts of the complex are in need of repair, but the durbar hall and the towers still show how grand it once was.
