Best time to visit Thekkady

The best time to visit Thekkady is from October to March, when the days are pleasant, the rain has mostly cleared and the Periyar Tiger Reserve is easy to explore. If your main goal is wildlife, March to May can be better, as waterholes in the forest dry up and animals come down to the lake.

Thekkady is in the hills, so it never gets truly cold, and it rarely gets as hot as the coast. The heaviest rain falls from June to August, when the forest is very green but the trails are wet and full of leeches. The reserve stays open for most of the year, but activities can be stopped at short notice in very heavy rain.

Best Month to Visit Thekkady

October and November

The southwest monsoon ends, but the northeast monsoon often brings afternoon showers. The forest is lush, waterfalls are full and crowds are still modest. A good time for nature walks and plantation tours if you do not mind some rain.

December to February

These are the coolest and driest months, with clear mornings and cool evenings. This is the main season, so boats, walks and rooms fill up quickly, especially around Christmas and New Year.

March to May

Days get warmer, but Thekkady stays milder than the coast. As the forest dries out, animals come to the lake more often, which makes this a good time for the boat ride. Afternoon thunderstorms become common towards May.

June to September

The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain, especially from June to August. The hills are very green and the spice plantations look their best, but trails are slippery and leeches are everywhere. Boat rides and other activities can be cancelled in bad weather, so keep your plans flexible.

When Is Thekkady Most Crowded?

Thekkady is busiest from December to January, during Onam in August or September, and on long weekends and school holidays. Kumily is also on a pilgrim route to Sabarimala, so traffic through the town can be heavy in the pilgrimage season from about November to January.

For a quieter trip, visit on weekdays in October–November or February–March, and book the first boat of the day, which is usually less crowded as well as better for wildlife.

Questions

Thekkady — FAQ

What is the best month to visit Thekkady?

October to March is the best time for pleasant weather. For the best chance of seeing animals at the lake, March to May is often better.

Is it good to visit Thekkady in the monsoon?

It can be. The forest and plantations are at their greenest, and there are fewer visitors. But heavy rain can cancel boat rides and walks, and leeches are common on trails, so pack for the wet and stay flexible.

When is the best time to see animals in Periyar?

The dry months from March to May usually give the best sightings, as animals come to the lake to drink. Early mornings are best at any time of year, although sightings are never guaranteed.

How hot does Thekkady get in summer?

Thekkady stays milder than Kerala's coast because of its height of about 900 m. Summer afternoons are warm, but mornings and evenings are usually comfortable.
