About the Periyar Tiger Reserve
The Periyar Tiger Reserve covers about 925 sq km of forest in the Cardamom Hills around Periyar Lake. It became a sanctuary in 1950 and a tiger reserve in 1978, and it is one of the best-known protected forests in South India. The reserve is home to elephants, gaur, sambar deer, wild boar, otters, many birds and a small number of tigers.
Visitors explore the reserve through programmes run by the Kerala Forest Department, many of them led by trained local guides.
