Best time to visit Thrissur
The best time to visit Thrissur is from October to March, when the days are warm rather than hot and the heavy rain has passed. This is the easiest time for walking around the city and for day trips to Guruvayur and Kalamandalam.
The calendar changes the picture. Thrissur Pooram falls in April or May, the hottest part of the year, and Onam brings the Pulikali tiger dance in August or September, during the monsoon. The rains from June to September are heavy but make Athirappilly Falls fuller than at any other time.

October and November
The southwest monsoon has ended, the countryside is green and Athirappilly Falls is still full. Expect some afternoon showers, as Kerala gets a second, lighter rainy season around this time.
December to February
The most comfortable months, with warm days, less humidity and cooler early mornings. A good time for temples, walks around Swaraj Round and trips out of the city. Christmas is celebrated in Thrissur's churches.
March to May
It gets hot and very humid, so plan sightseeing for early morning and evening. Kalamandalam usually closes for exams and summer holidays from late March to May. The big reason to come now is Thrissur Pooram, usually in April or early May.
June to September
The monsoon brings heavy rain and a green, wet landscape. Athirappilly Falls is at its most powerful, though access close to the falls may be restricted after heavy rain. Onam and Pulikali usually fall in August or September.
When Is Thrissur Most Crowded?
The city is at its busiest during Thrissur Pooram in April or May, when hundreds of thousands of people fill the centre and rooms book out far ahead. Onam, especially Pulikali day, and Christmas to New Year are also busy.
Guruvayur Temple is crowded all year, and most of all on weekends, holidays and auspicious wedding days. For a quieter trip, visit between December and February, away from the festival dates, and start your day early.
Questions
Thrissur — FAQ
When is Thrissur Pooram?
Thrissur Pooram is held in the Malayalam month of Medam, usually in late April or early May. The date changes each year, so check it before you book.
Is the monsoon a good time to visit Thrissur?
It can be, if you do not mind heavy rain. The countryside is green and Athirappilly Falls is at its fullest, but some outdoor plans will be rained off, and paths near the falls may be closed after heavy rain.
How hot is Thrissur in summer?
March to May is hot and humid, and the heat can be tiring in the middle of the day. Plan temple visits and walks for early morning or evening, and drink plenty of water.
When is the best time to visit Athirappilly Falls?
The falls are fullest from August to October, during and just after the monsoon. From December to May the flow is much lower, though the forest drive is still pleasant.
