Local tips
Arrive when the gates open for softer light and fewer people.
Visit from August to October to see the falls at their fullest.
Wear shoes or sandals with a good grip, as the steps down are steep and slippery.
Stay behind the barriers and do not climb onto wet rocks near the edge.
Do not swim or step into the river, as the current can be strong.
Carry a dry bag or cover for your phone, as the spray reaches the lower path.
Combine your visit with Vazhachal Falls, a short drive further on.
About Athirappilly Falls
Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala, where the Chalakudy river drops about 80 feet over a wide rock face into the forest below. It is about 55–60 km from Thrissur, and the drive through plantations and forest is part of the trip.
The falls change a lot through the year. During and just after the monsoon they are a broad, roaring curtain of water; in the dry months they split into several narrower streams. A paved path leads to a viewpoint at the top, and a steeper trail of steps goes down towards the base when it is open. Vazhachal Falls, a smaller series of cascades, is a few kilometres further up the same road.
