About Guruvayur Temple

Guruvayur Temple, about 26 km from Thrissur, is one of the most important Krishna temples in India, where Krishna is worshipped as Guruvayurappan. It is busy from before dawn until night, and it is a favourite place for Hindu weddings, with many couples married in quick succession on auspicious days, and for a baby's first-rice ceremony.

The rules are strict. Only Hindus may enter, men must wear a plain mundu with no shirt, and phones and cameras have to be left at the counters outside. Visitors who cannot go in can still see the east entrance, the tall lamp tower and the busy temple street, and can visit Punnathur Kotta, the temple's elephant camp about 2–3 km away, where dozens of elephants offered to the temple are kept.
