About Kerala Kalamandalam

Kerala Kalamandalam, at Cheruthuruthy about 30 km north of Thrissur, is the best-known school for Kerala's classical arts. Founded by the poet Vallathol Narayana Menon in 1930, it trains students in Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam, Thullal and traditional percussion, in the old teacher-and-student style.

Visitors can join a guided tour on working mornings to see classes in the open-sided kalaris (practice halls), the traditional koothambalam (temple theatre) and the museum. Kalamandalam also runs a longer, booked programme called A Day with the Masters, run with Kerala Tourism, for a closer look at the arts. Classes stop for exams and holidays, including summer (roughly late March to May), Onam and Christmas, so check before you go.
