About Thekkinkadu Maidan
Thekkinkadu Maidan is the large, tree-shaded ground on a low hill in the centre of Thrissur, with the Vadakkunnathan Temple standing in the middle. Swaraj Round, the city's main ring road, runs all the way around it, so almost every trip across Thrissur passes by.
Most of the year it is a calm, open space where people walk, sit under the trees and look up at the temple gopurams. Once a year, in April or May, it becomes the stage for Thrissur Pooram. The temple elephants line up facing each other near the south gopuram, drummers play for hours, and the kudamattam parasol display draws huge crowds. It is free to walk on, and the ground is open to everyone, whatever their religion.
