The Tirupati laddu

The laddu is made in the temple's own kitchen at Tirumala, called the Laddu Potu, from gram flour, sugar, ghee, cashews, raisins and cardamom. It has been served here since at least 1715 and has held a Geographical Indication tag since 2009, so no one else can sell a sweet under that name. You collect it at the laddu counters at Tirumala after darshan. Buy what you need before you go down the hill; it is not made anywhere else.

Free meals on the hill

TTD runs a large free dining hall at Tirumala, the Tarigonda Vengamamba Annaprasadam complex, which serves simple vegetarian meals to pilgrims through the day. Food and milk are also handed out in the waiting halls of the queue complex. The whole of Tirumala is vegetarian.

Pulihora

Tamarind rice tempered with mustard seeds, peanuts, curry leaves and dried chilli. It is a standard temple offering across Andhra and travels well, which is why families pack it for the journey.

Andhra meals

The full lunch in town is served on a banana leaf: rice with pappu (dal), a sour pachadi chutney, sambar, rasam, two or three vegetable dishes, pickle, ghee and curd. The food is hotter than in the rest of the south, so eat the curd rice at the end. Refills keep coming until you fold the leaf.

Breakfast

Pesarattu is a thin, crisp crêpe of green gram, often served with upma folded inside and ginger chutney. Ven pongal is soft rice and lentils cooked with pepper, cumin and ghee. Both are best early, with a strong filter coffee.

Down in town

Tirupati town is not restricted like Tirumala, and you will find some non-vegetarian food. Most pilgrim-facing restaurants near the station and the temples are pure vegetarian.

Questions

Tirupati — FAQ

Can I buy the Tirupati laddu in Tirupati town?

Plan to collect it at Tirumala. The laddu is made in the temple kitchen on the hill and handed out at the counters there, so do not leave Tirumala expecting to buy it later.

Is there free food at Tirumala?

Yes. TTD serves free vegetarian meals at its annaprasadam hall on the hill, and food and milk are given out in the queue complex waiting halls.

Is Andhra food very spicy?

Usually, yes. Ask for less chilli, eat with plenty of rice and curd, and try the milder breakfasts such as pongal first.
