About Nagore Dargah
Nagore Dargah is the tomb of Hazrat Syed Shahul Hameed, a Sufi saint of the 16th century, in the coastal town of Nagore about 20 km north of Velankanni. It is one of the best-known Sufi shrines in South India, with five minarets of different heights. The tallest was built by the Hindu Maratha ruler Pratap Singh of Thanjavur.
The dargah is a place of shared faith. A large share of the pilgrims who visit every day are Hindus, and many people come from the basilica at Velankanni on the same trip. Its biggest event is the 14-day Kandoori festival, which ends with a sandal procession and follows the Islamic calendar, so its dates change each year.
