About Tharangambadi

Tharangambadi, also known as Tranquebar, was a Danish trading colony for more than 200 years. Its best-known sight is Fort Dansborg, built in 1620 by Admiral Ove Gjedde of the Danish East India Company, right on the seashore. The fort now houses a small museum of Danish-era objects.

The old town is small and easy to walk. Pass through the Town Gate of 1792, see Zion Church and New Jerusalem Church, both from the early 1700s, and stop at the 13th-century Masilamaninathar Temple on the shore. Tharangambadi is about 45 km north of Velankanni and makes a calm half-day trip.
