About the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health is the reason Velankanni exists as a pilgrim town. Its white Gothic front and tall spires face the Bay of Bengal, and the church was raised to a basilica by Pope John XXIII in 1962. Local tradition links it to appearances of Mary to a shepherd boy and a disabled buttermilk seller, and to Portuguese sailors who reached this shore safely in a storm.

Today it is one of the most visited Christian shrines in India, and many of its pilgrims are Hindus and Muslims. The complex includes the main shrine, the Lower Basilica, the Morning Star Church and a museum. Masses are held through the day in several languages, and the grounds are busiest during the feast from 29 August to 8 September.
