What to Wear in Visakhapatnam

Vizag is humid all year, so light cotton and linen beat anything synthetic. Pack one modest traditional outfit for Simhachalam, and a jacket if you are heading up to Araku in winter.

Dressing for the humidity

Even in December the afternoon is close to 30 °C by the sea, and the air stays damp all year. Loose cotton and linen in light colours are what locals wear. A cap and sunglasses help on the long, shadeless Beach Road walk. Summer, from March to June, is hot and sticky, and you will change your shirt by lunch. Carry a spare if you have a full day out.

On the beach

RK Beach and the other city beaches are family promenades, not resort beaches. People go in with their clothes on, and swimwear on its own draws stares. Shorts and T-shirts are fine for walking. Since swimming is unsafe on most of this coast, you will not need much more than sandals you can rinse.

At Simhachalam

The temple does not enforce a strict code, but it asks for traditional clothes. For men that means a pancha or dhoti, or trousers with a kurta or shirt. For women, a sari, a salwar kameez or a churidar with a dupatta. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops and short skirts. You leave shoes and phones outside, and the stone floors can be hot by late morning, so go early.

Up in Araku

Araku sits about 900 metres up in the ghats and is noticeably cooler than the coast. From December to February, early mornings in the valley can be cold and misty. Take a light jacket or fleece for the dawn train and the viewpoints. For Borra Caves, wear shoes with grip; the steps and cave floor get wet.

In the rains

October brings Vizag's heaviest rain, and June to September are wet too. Quick-dry clothes, an umbrella and sandals or shoes that can take puddles save a lot of discomfort. Leave leather at home.

Local wear worth buying

Handloom saris and cotton fabrics are sold around Jagadamba Junction. Look for Telugu weaves such as Pochampally ikat, and for plain cotton panchas if you want something to wear to the temple.

Questions

Visakhapatnam — FAQ

Can I wear shorts to Simhachalam temple?

It is better not to. Traditional dress is preferred, and shorts, sleeveless tops and short skirts are frowned on. Trousers with a shirt, or a salwar or sari, are safe choices.

Do I need warm clothes for Araku in December?

Yes, a light jacket or fleece. The valley is about 900 metres up, and early mornings and evenings in winter are cold compared with the coast.

What should I wear to the beach in Vizag?

Light, covered casual clothes. The city beaches are family places, and swimming is unsafe on most of them, so there is little call for swimwear.

Where can I buy handloom saris in Visakhapatnam?

The shops around Jagadamba Junction are the main place for saris and cotton fabric. Ask for handloom rather than power-loom if you want the real weave.
