Wat Arun
Bangkok, Bangkok Metropolitan Region
The Temple of Dawn, on the Thonburi bank — a seventy-metre Khmer-style prang encrusted with broken Chinese porcelain that arrived as ballast in trading ships, so that the whole spire is made of flowers and patterns assembled from smashed plates.

Local tips
The cross-river ferry from Tha Tien costs a few baht and runs constantly. Do not take a longtail tour to get here; you are crossing a river, not making a journey.
Climbing to the upper terraces has been restricted since the restoration; the first terrace is open and gives the river view. Check at the gate rather than planning the climb.
Get close to the surface. From across the river it reads as decoration; from a metre away it is thousands of pieces of broken porcelain set by hand, and that is the actual thing.
The bars and restaurants on the Tha Tien bank exist entirely for the sunset view of this temple. A drink at one is the cheapest good decision in Bangkok.
Wat Arun
Photographers come to Bangkok for Wat Arun - here is the working plan, from arrival to the last frame. Entry is around ฿200 for foreign visitors, and the posted hours are typically 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, with last entry around 5:30 PM.
📸 The shot
The frames that last from a temple are the lived ones - lamps at a threshold, the quiet side aisles, the rituals at the edge of the main hall.
Start from the recommended angle (from the Tha Tien side of the river at dusk, wide, with the water in the bottom third; up close, get low against the porcelain so the individual plate fragments read as what they are) and work outward; it is the composition the spot rewards.
🕒 When the light is right
The light window is the short version in the timing row: sunset from the opposite bank, when the prang is lit from behind and then floodlit after dark — the name says dawn and the photograph is the evening, which is the joke of the place. Build the visit around it rather than around the clock.
This is a shared spot at shared hours - the trick is the shoulder window, just before close or just after the opening rush.
👕 What to wear
The colours that work here do so for a reason - white keeps a frame clean even when the background is busy; and gold picks up lamplight and late afternoon sun. Work the suggested poses in order; the first (on the terrace steps with the porcelain spire above) is the keeper for most people.
