Best time to visit Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is best in Winter, but each season has its own character. Here's what to expect, what to pack, and what shines — then build a day around it.
Chiang Mai splits cleanly into a comfortable half of the year and a punishing one. The gap between them is wide enough that the same itinerary is a pleasure in one and barely doable in the other.
On weather alone, winter is the window — which is also when prices and crowds peak, so the shoulder weeks either side are usually the better trade, especially for the 7 spots below that reward an early start.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedNov – Feb
The cool, dry season and the best time to come — sunny days around 30 °C, with chilly mornings and evenings in December and January. From late January, smoke from field burning starts to haze the sky.
Pack: light clothes by day and a warm layer for early mornings and after dark.
Shines now: Doi Inthanon

Mar – May
The hot season — highs of 35–40 °C, with April the hardest month. Burning-season smoke can make the air unhealthy until the first storms in late April or May.
Pack: loose light cottons, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, plenty of water — and a mask for smoky days.
Shines now: Doi Inthanon

Jun – Oct
The rainy season — a heavy downpour most afternoons or evenings, usually over within an hour or two, and mornings are often dry. September and October are the wettest months, when low-lying streets can flood.
Pack: an umbrella or light rain shell, quick-dry clothes and sandals that cope with puddles.
Shines now: Bua Thong sticky waterfalls
