What to Wear in Chiang Mai
What works in Chiang Mai is set by two things: the weather you will actually be standing in, and how much of the day you spend around temples, monuments and markets, where covered shoulders and knees are expected. Chiang Mai is hot for most of the year and humid through a long rainy season, so breathable cotton and something that copes with a downpour matter more than warmth.
The traditional wear recorded for Chiang Mai is Mor hom indigo. Mor hom is genuinely everyday rather than ceremonial, which makes it the easiest traditional garment in this guide for a visitor to wear honestly — northerners put it on for work, for festivals and for civic occasions, and nobody reads it as costume. The dye is the thing to check: real indigo is fermented in a vat, dyes unevenly, and keeps fading for years into the soft blue that people prize, where a chemical print stays flat and exact. The best of it comes from Phrae province, and the Wua Lai and Warorot markets sell both kinds side by side. What would read as costume is the full Lanna court outfit hired by the hour for photographs at temples — common, tolerated, and a different thing entirely.
Colours that photograph well here: White, Saffron, Terracotta and Indigo. For everyday looks the Dressed for a day of Lanna temples and Elephant camp and waterfall kit options are the easiest starting point.
On footwear — slip-ons, and socks you do not mind on a hot stone terrace. You will be taking shoes off at temples either way, so slip-ons save more time than they sound like they would.
Across the year: winter (Nov – Feb) — light clothes by day, with a warm layer for chilly early mornings and evenings · modest, covered dress, slip-off shoes (removed inside); summer (Mar – May) — light cottons, a hat & sunglasses · modest, covered dress, slip-off shoes (removed inside); monsoon (Jun – Oct) — a rain shell or umbrella + quick-dry clothes · modest, covered dress, waterproof, grippy shoes.
