Railay

Krabi, Krabi Province

A peninsula cut off from the mainland by limestone walls, with no road in and four beaches on it — a wide west-facing bay for the sunset, a mangrove-fringed east side where the boats dock, and cliffs above both that made this one of the birthplaces of Southeast Asian sport climbing.

Good to know

Local tips

There is no road. Everything and everyone arrives by longtail from Ao Nang or Krabi Town, boats go when they are full rather than on a timetable, and the last one back is early evening — check it before you cross.

You land in the water. Longtails beach bow-first and you step off into knee-deep sea with your bag, which is what the dry bag is for.

Railay West is the postcard and Railay East is where the cheap rooms and the boats are; a five-minute walkway joins them. Tonsai, round the headland, is the climbers' beach and is cheaper again.

Because there is no road, prices here are boat-freight prices. Krabi Town is a third of the cost for the same dinner.

Railay

Photographers come to Krabi for Railay - here is the working plan, from arrival to the last frame. Budget for entry (the longtail fare each way); as for timing, open access; longtails run from morning until early evening.

📷 The frame that works

Beaches shoot best low and wide - foreground texture in the sand, the horizon level, people small against the water.

The frame to set up first is the one this guide's angle row describes - from the water's edge at the southern end of Railay West looking north, so a cliff wall frames one side of the bay and the boats sit in the middle distance - and everything else is a variation on it.

🌄 Light and crowds

The light window is the short version in the timing row: the hour before sunset on Railay West, when the karsts either side of the bay go orange and the longtails are silhouetted — the east side is in shadow all afternoon and is a mangrove flat at low tide. Build the visit around it rather than around the clock.

This is a shared spot at shared hours - the trick is the shoulder window, just before close or just after the opening rush.

🧵 Colour and clothing

The colours that work here do so for a reason - white keeps a frame clean even when the background is busy; and turquoise is the complementary note against pink and orange walls. Work the suggested poses in order; the first (on Railay West at sunset with the karst wall behind) is the keeper for most people.
