Local notes for Krabi
The national-park fee for the islands is charged on top of the boat trip at the foreigner rate, and the four-island tour price you are quoted usually does not include it. Ask.
Railay is a captive market: the peninsula has no road, everything arrives by boat, and food and drink cost noticeably more than on the mainland for that reason. Krabi Town is the cheap end of the province.
Tiger Cave Temple is free, the Emerald Pool and the hot springs are small national-park tickets, and the best thing in the province — the view from the top of those steps — costs nothing but the climb.
Climbing is priced per course through the schools at Railay and Tonsai and includes gear; the half-day beginner course is the standard first purchase and is not the thing to cut corners on.
Planning a budget for Krabi
Budgeting Krabi is simpler than it looks: four lines decide the total - the room, the food, the rides and the tickets - and every one of them bends to choice.
The city in one line: The Andaman mainland, where limestone karsts stand straight out of the sea and out of the rice fields behind it
The November to March, when the Andaman is calm and the boats run; May to October is the monsoon, with rough seas, red flags and jellyfish window is also the pricing window - the pleasant months are the expensive months for rooms, and the shoulder edges of that window are where the value sits.
💸 The cost character of a trip to Krabi
The cost character of Thailand: street food and songthaews are kind to every wallet, and the expensive lines are the beach-and-boat experiences rather than daily life.
🏨 Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest single line, and the levers are the same everywhere: book early inside the recommended season, trade a central address for one a short ride out, and let the tier - guesthouse, mid-range hotel, heritage splurge - do the rest.
Location pricing is universal: the address inside the old core costs for the privilege, and the same room a stop or two out quietly does not.
Peak-season arithmetic applies to November to March, when the Andaman is calm and the boats run; May to October is the monsoon, with rough seas, red flags and jellyfish: book the room first, and if the dates flex at all, the edges of the window price kinder than its centre.
🍽️ Eating well on every budget
In Thailand the street stall is not the budget option that makes do - it is frequently the best food in the district, at prices that make restaurant meals look like a decision rather than a necessity.
🚕 Getting around for less
Public transport is the value answer everywhere here - day passes and contactless cards make heavy sightseeing days simple, and single tickets are priced for daily use, not visitor extraction.
Fares, small buys and snacks run in THB - carry smaller denominations than feels necessary; they are what daily life actually uses.
🎟️ Sightseeing and tickets
Budget for temple and park entries in Thailand: the wats are small lines, the national parks are bigger ones, and both are priced openly at the gate.
💳 Cards, cash and tipping
Cash is still the working currency of markets and stalls while cards cover hotels and bigger restaurants; tipping is light by international standards - rounding up the bill and leaving the coins is the local register.
📊 Shaping the day
A careful day here is not a lesser one: the free layer plus one ticket plus local food is the itinerary most visitors remember anyway.
The comfortable day adds a mid-range room, a restaurant meal or two, app cabs in place of buses and a second ticket - and the generous day adds the heritage stay, the guided experiences and whatever the region is famous for at full price.
✅ The one-minute checklist
-
Book inside November to March, when the Andaman is calm and the boats run; May to October is the monsoon, with rough seas, red flags and jellyfish early - the window is the pricing window
-
The room is the biggest line - tier it consciously (guesthouse → mid-range → splurge)
-
Street stalls and markets are the best food and the cheapest
-
Budget for park entries and the big temple tickets - posted openly
-
Cash for the street, cards for the rest
-
Daily spending in THB
-
A lean day here is still a full day - budget by comfort, not by access
