Phuket Old Town

Phuket, Phuket Province

Five streets of Sino-Portuguese shophouses built on tin money in the nineteenth century — arcaded walkways, pastel stucco, Chinese courtyards behind European façades — restored rather than rebuilt, and now full of cafés, galleries and the island's best cheap food.

Good to know

Local tips

Sunday evening is when Thalang Road closes to traffic and becomes a walking-street market — it is the best food in Phuket Town and the only time the street is properly alive.

The buildings are Sino-Portuguese: Chinese plan, European front, built by Hokkien traders who came up from Penang with the tin trade. The same style is in Penang and Melaka and nowhere else in Thailand.

People live here. The famous doorways and painted walls are private houses, and the polite version is to shoot wide or ask.

It is twenty minutes and a different world from Patong, and it is where to eat: Hokkien mee, moo hong and oh aew are Phuket dishes you will not find on the beach strip.

Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town: the street shoot in Phuket, and the plan below is how to work it in the time the light gives you. Budget for entry (free); the posted hours are a working neighbourhood; shops from mid-morning, the Sunday night market from about 4:00 PM.

📷 The frame that works

On a street the people are the photograph - ask before you point, buy something where you shoot, and keep the camera up between frames rather than hiding it.

Start from the recommended angle (down the length of an arcade so the repeated arches recede, rather than a flat elevation of one painted façade; the arcade is the architecture and everybody photographs the paint) and work outward; it is the composition the spot rewards.

🌄 Light and crowds

Time the visit for the window that suits the shot - early morning, when the arcades are in shade and the light comes down Thalang Road end-on — and again at dusk, when the shopfront lights come on under the arcades - and let everything else flex.

Expect a working level of company - arrive with a little slack in the schedule and the frames open up.

🧵 Colour and clothing

The colours that work here do so for a reason - cream photographs softer than white and suits heritage backdrops; and turquoise is the complementary note against pink and orange walls. Work the suggested poses in order; the first (under the arcade on Thalang Road with the arches running away) is the keeper for most people.

📋 The working plan

Go with the timing row, the angle row and one pose - that is a complete visit.
