About Adalaj Stepwell
Adalaj Stepwell, about 18 km north of central Ahmedabad, is a five-storey stepwell built in 1498–99 to store water through the dry months. It was begun for Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty and completed by his widow, Rani Rudabai, in the reign of Sultan Mahmud Begada. Local legend says that the sultan wanted to marry her, and that once the well was finished, she jumped into it rather than accept.
Three flights of steps lead down into the well, a rare design, and meet before dropping through five levels of carved sandstone pillars and balconies to the octagonal well shaft. Look for the elephants on the upper floors, each carved in a different design, and scenes of women churning buttermilk, dancers and musicians. The air inside is noticeably cooler than outside, which made the stepwell a place to rest as well as to draw water.
