About Kankaria Lake

Kankaria Lake, south-east of the old city, is a 15th-century reservoir completed in 1451 under Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II. It looks round but is actually a 34-sided polygon with a shore of about 2.25 km, and its name is said to come from kankar, the limestone dug out when it was built. In the middle is Nagina Wadi, a garden island joined to the shore by a bridge.

Since the lakefront was redeveloped in 2008, Kankaria has become one of the city's favourite family outings. Around the water you will find a promenade, a zoo, a toy train, a tethered balloon ride and Kids City, and in the last week of December the lake hosts the Kankaria Carnival. It is busiest in the evening, when the lights come on and families come out to walk.
