About Sidi Saiyyed Mosque
Sidi Saiyyed Mosque stands near Lal Darwaja, in the middle of a busy junction in the old city. It was built in 1572–73 by Sidi Saiyyed, a nobleman of African (Abyssinian) descent who served in the army of the last Sultan of Gujarat, in the final year of the sultanate before the Mughals took over.
The mosque is famous for its ten carved stone jalis, or lattice windows, in its side and rear arches. The two on either side of the central arch show intertwined trees, branches and palm fronds, carved so finely that the stone looks like lace. This tree-of-life jali has become a symbol of Ahmedabad and inspired the logo of IIM Ahmedabad. The central arch itself is filled with plain stone, perhaps because the mosque was never finished.
