Where to Eat in Aizawl

Aizawl eats early and stays home on Sunday. Plan your meals around both, and you will find honest Mizo food and good coffee across the city.

Not sure what to order? The Aizawl food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

David's Kitchen

David's Kitchen, on the Chanmari–Chaltlang road, is one of the best-known restaurants in Aizawl for Mizo food. Order a Mizo thali, bai and smoked pork, and ask what is good that day. It is a short ride from the centre and on the way to Durtlang Hills, so it pairs well with a sunset visit.

Bamboo Hut

Bamboo Hut is a relaxed restaurant with bamboo décor and a mixed menu. It is listed here for bai and bamboo-shoot dishes. The menu also covers other Asian food, so ask what Mizo dishes they are cooking on the day. It is handy after a morning at Bara Bazar.

Near Solomon's Temple

Solomon's Temple is about 10 km from the centre, and its compound has a restaurant for visitors. It is useful if you arrive around lunch. Other cafés in the city serve thalis, sawhchiar, coffee and bakes; check opening days before you set out.

At Reiek

The state tourism department runs a cafeteria at the Reiek tourist resort, and there are small cafés near the hill. Choice is limited, so carry water and a snack for the climb, and eat when you get back down.

Eating times

Many Mizo families eat their two main rice meals early, around mid-morning and early evening. Restaurant kitchens often close early too. Aim to eat dinner by about 8 pm, and check the closing time if you are out late.

Sundays and alcohol

Most restaurants close on Sunday. Some hotel restaurants stay open for guests, so ask your hotel on Saturday what will be serving. Mizoram is dry, and no restaurant will serve alcohol.

Street snacks and bakeries

Around the markets you will find tea stalls, bakeries and snack counters. They are good for a quick cup of tea and a bun between sights. Pay in cash where cards are not taken. Small shops may not have change for large notes.
