Local tips

Start early from Aizawl, because clouds often build around the summit by afternoon.

Wear shoes with a good grip, as the rocks near the top are slippery after rain.

Carry water and a snack, since there are few places to buy food on the hill.

Stay away from the cliff edge on the steep side of the ridge.

Visit the heritage village after the climb, when you have time to look inside the houses.

Keep your taxi for the return, as transport back from Reiek is not easy to find.

Go between October and April for the best chance of clear, long views.

A hill above the valleys

Reiek is a hill about 29 km from Aizawl, rising to 1,465 metres. It is a cuesta, a ridge with a gentle slope on one side and a steep drop on the other. From the top you look out over the forested hills and valleys of western Mizoram. On a very clear day you can see as far as the plains of Bangladesh.

The climb

The walk up to the summit goes through forest and over rocky ground near the top. It is not long, but it is steep in places and slippery after rain. Wear shoes with a good grip, carry water and take your time on the rocks. Do not go near the cliff edge on the steep side.

The heritage village

Below the summit, the state tourism department has built a traditional Mizo village. It has houses of different Mizo groups, a chief's house, a zawlbuk (the dormitory where young men once lived and learned village ways) and a widow's house. The houses are furnished, and a few newer Mizo houses nearby show how homes have changed. It is a good place to understand the old village life described in the state museum.

Birds and forest

The forest around Reiek is home to many hill birds, including the peregrine falcon. Early mornings are best for birdwatching.

Practical details

The drive from Aizawl usually takes an hour or more, depending on the road. The tourism department runs a resort and cafeteria here. The Anthurium Festival has been held at Reiek in past years; check the venue if you plan to visit for it. Go between October and April for the clearest views. In the monsoon the trail is muddy and cloud often covers the top.
