Shoot the city from above
The one picture everyone wants is Aizawl spread along its ridges. Durtlang Hills, on the northern edge, gives you that view. Go late in the afternoon, stay for sunset, and wait for the lights to come on across the slopes. A small tripod or a steady railing helps once it gets dark.
A white church in a green valley
Solomon's Temple sits in Kidron Valley, about 10 km from the centre. Its white walls and four crowned corner towers photograph best from a little way back, with the trees of the compound in front. It is closed to visitors on Sundays, when services are held.
Reiek: the long view
Reiek, about 29 km out, rises to 1,465 metres. From the top you look back over forested ridges and, on clear winter days, towards the plains of Bangladesh. The heritage village below the summit has traditional Mizo houses, including a chief's house and a bachelors' dormitory, which make good wide shots.
Indoors and in the crowd
The Mizoram State Museum is the place for close-ups of puan weaving and old Mizo ornaments; ask at the desk before you photograph inside. Bara Bazar is colour and movement, stalls of cloth, greens and smoked meat on the hillside. Ask vendors before you take a portrait, and keep the lens off anyone who says no.
Light and weather
From October to February the air is usually clear, and mornings can start with mist in the valleys that burns off by mid-morning. From May to September, cloud often sits on the ridges and the views can disappear for days. Mizoram also keeps an early clock: the sun rises and sets earlier than in most of India, so plan your sunset shots for late afternoon.
