Local tips
Go on a weekday, as the temple is closed to visitors on Sunday for services.
Arrive soon after opening for softer light on the white walls and fewer visitors.
Cover your shoulders and knees, because this is a working church and not a monument.
Ask the staff before you take photos inside the hall.
Keep your taxi or arrange a pick-up time, since the valley is about 10 km from the centre.
Use the visitors' restaurant in the complex if you arrive around lunchtime.
Expect extra crowds and church events in late December, and plan around them.
A church from a dream
Solomon's Temple is Aizawl's largest church and its most visited sight. It was built by Kohhran Thianghlim, the Holy Church, a Mizo church founded by Dr L. B. Sailo in 1984. Its founder said he saw the temple in a dream in 1991. The foundation stone was laid in December 1996, and a Christmas service in 2017 opened the building. Most of the money came from church members.
What you will see
The temple is a square white building with a crowned tower at each corner. The crowns stand for four crowns named in the Bible. There are twelve doors, three on each side. Above the northern porch, now the main entrance, two angels blow trumpets. Four pillars carry seven stars each, for the seven churches of the Book of Revelation. The main hall holds about 2,000 people and the courtyard about 10,000. The grounds are wooded, and there is a restaurant for visitors.
Where it is
The temple stands in Kidron Valley, about 10 km from central Aizawl, at Chawlhhmun. Take a taxi and ask the driver to wait or come back. The district administration still describes parts of the complex as under construction.
Visiting
Visitors are welcome from Monday to Saturday. The district's listed hours are 10 am to 4 pm from October to February and 10 am to 5 pm from March to September; check before you go. It is closed to visitors on Sunday, when services are held. Late December is busy with the church's own gatherings.
Respect
This is a working church, not a monument. Dress modestly, speak quietly and follow the staff's directions. Photograph the outside and grounds freely, but ask before taking photos inside, and never photograph a service.
