Mizo life in one building

The Mizoram State Museum is the best place in Aizawl to learn about Mizo culture before you see the rest of the city. It opened in 1977 and moved to its present building on McDonald Hill, in the Zarkawt area, in 1990. The collection covers four floors.

The galleries

There are galleries for textiles, ethnology, history, anthropology and natural history, and an archaeology terrace. The textile gallery shows handwoven puans and their patterns, and it helps you read the cloth for sale at Bara Bazar. Other rooms show traditional costumes for men and women, ornaments, musical instruments, weapons, farm tools and models of Mizo houses and village life. There are also displays of local plants and animals.

A hill with a story

McDonald Hill was where the first missionaries, Lorrain and Savidge, built their bamboo house in 1894. Here they began writing Mizo in the Roman alphabet. It is a fitting place for the state's museum.

Opening days

The museum is closed on Sundays and public holidays. It is usually open on weekdays and for shorter hours on Saturdays, and some sources list shorter hours on Monday too. Check the day's times before you go, and aim for a weekday morning.

Tickets and photos

There is a small entry fee. Ask at the desk whether photography is allowed inside and whether there is a camera charge; rules may change. Allow about an hour, more if you read the labels closely.

Pair it with

The museum is close to the centre. Walk or take a short taxi ride to Bara Bazar afterwards. The museum also makes good background for Reiek's heritage village.
