Getting around Ajanta
Ajanta is reached by rail, and the city itself is spread out - long, flat distances.
The short version of the city: A UNESCO horseshoe gorge of 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves
✈️ Arriving in Ajanta
The railway station puts Ajanta on the long-distance network - for most travellers arriving by train, the station is the practical city centre entrance, with local transport at the forecourt.
The recommended season shapes the arrival experience: October to March is when the city is at its most comfortable.
🚕 Getting around town
Without a metro, app cabs and auto-rickshaws carry the visitor's day: metered or app-priced cabs for comfort, negotiated autos for short hops, buses for the patient.
App cabs remove the fare negotiation entirely - the meter is the app, the route is visible, and payment is cashless if you want it to be. In smaller cities, availability thins late at night.
🚶 Walking and distances
The city is flat but spread out - the historic cores walk well, the distances between quarters do not; mix walking in the centres with rides between them.
💡 Local know-how
The practical rhythm in Indian cities: start early, stay central at midday, and keep the last ride of the evening short.
Small denominations solve half of daily transport friction; carry them.
The first-day rule that never fails: a single ride in, a local walk, an early night - the second day, with bearings, is when the city opens up.
🗺️ Orientation
Orient on the city's main roads first - in spread-out plains cities, knowing two arterial roads and how they cross is most of the mental map.
If you arrived by train, the station is usually the practical anchor of the map - the first ride from it sets your bearings, and returning to it is the simplest fallback in any city.
🕐 Planning the day
Shape sightseeing days around the traffic, not against it: early starts, midday density, and a plan that does not cross the city twice at rush hour.
One area per half-day is the rule that quietly doubles what a day holds; zig-zags across town are what halve it.
In the October to March season, add the weather to the plan - the pleasant months widen the comfortable hours, and the off months concentrate the day into mornings and evenings.
✅ The one-minute checklist
-
Arriving: by train - the station forecourt has the local modes
-
Short hops: autos and app cabs - agree auto fares first or let the app price it
-
Carry small notes for fares and tips
-
On foot: walk the centres, ride between them
