Local tips

Start the climb soon after sunrise, before the heat and the day visitors.

Carry water, as there are only a few stalls on the way up.

Wear shoes with grip, because the stone steps get slippery after rain.

Keep food and bags closed, as monkeys on the hill snatch snacks.

Allow about two and a half hours for the climb, the temple and the walk down.

Avoid Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri if you want a quiet visit.

Take a rickshaw from Alibaug to the base and agree the waiting time before you climb.

A Shiva temple on a hill

Kanakeshwar is a Shiva temple on a wooded hill about 12 km from Alibaug, near the village of Mapgaon. The hill rises to roughly 1,200 feet above the coastal plain. It is a pilgrimage site first, but many visitors come for the climb, the shade of the forest and the view over the coast.

The climb

Most visitors reach the temple by a long flight of stone steps. Counts quoted locally range from about 650 to 750, and most people take 45 minutes to an hour. The path is shaded for most of the way, which makes it bearable even in warm weather. There are places to rest along the way. Monkeys live on the hill, so keep food out of sight.

At the top

The main temple has a sabhamandap (hall) and an inner sanctum. Next to it is a pushkarni, a stepped water tank that holds water almost all year. Around the hilltop are smaller shrines, including ones to Kalbhairav, Vishnu, Maruti and Siddhivinayak. On a clear day you can see across farmland and palm groves to the sea.

Festival days

Mondays in the Shravan month (July to August), Mahashivratri and the Kartik Purnima fair bring the biggest crowds. On those days the steps are full from early morning.

Visiting respectfully

Cover your shoulders and knees and take your shoes off before the shrine. Ask before you take photos inside the temple. Photos on the steps and from the viewpoints are fine.

Getting there

Take a rickshaw or car from Alibaug to the base of the steps near Mapgaon. The drive takes about half an hour. Start early to climb in cool air.
