Best Photo Spots in Auli
Auli is photographed for one thing above all: a wall of Himalayan peaks behind open slopes. Everything here is about catching those peaks before the clouds rise.

Mornings or nothing
On most days the peaks are sharpest in the first two or three hours after sunrise. By late morning, cloud often builds from the valleys, and in summer it can hide Nanda Devi completely by noon. Stay in Auli rather than Joshimath if photos matter; you will be on the slope at first light instead of on the road.
The slopes
The Auli Ski Slopes face the big peaks directly. In winter, shoot skiers small against the white, with the mountains taking up the top half of the frame. In summer the same slope is green and dotted with grazing cattle. The chairlift gives a moving viewpoint; hold your phone tight, as anything dropped is gone.
The lake
The Auli Artificial Lake sits above the slopes. On a still morning it holds a reflection of the ridge. In deep winter it may be frozen or partly drained, so treat the reflection as a summer and autumn shot.
Above the chairlift
A walk of about 3 km from the top of the chairlift reaches Gurson Bugyal, where the view widens to a near full circle of peaks. About 1 km further, Chattrakund is a small lake inside the forest. It is a quieter, closer subject, better in soft light than for grand views.
The old ropeway
The Auli Ropeway has not run since January 2023. Its towers and cables still cross the hillside, and the stopped cabins make a quiet record of the Joshimath subsidence. Do not climb on the structures or enter fenced areas.
Practical notes
Snow glare is fierce, so expose for the snow and wear dark glasses. Cold drains batteries fast; keep a spare warm in an inside pocket. Ask before photographing shepherds and their flocks in the meadows. Drones are not a casual option this close to the border area and the Badrinath route; check the current rules with the local administration before flying one.
Questions
Auli — FAQ
Which peaks can I photograph from Auli?
On a clear day, Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dronagiri and Trishul are the names people look for, along with a long run of other Garhwal peaks. Gurson Bugyal shows the widest spread.
Is sunrise or sunset better in Auli?
Sunrise, in most seasons. The high peaks catch the first light, and clouds usually build later in the day.
Can I still photograph the Auli cable car?
You can photograph the towers and parked cabins from the slopes, but the ropeway is not running, so there are no rides and no views from the cabins.
When is the Auli lake best for reflections?
Early on a calm morning between April and November. In mid-winter it may be frozen, low or covered in snow.
