Where to Eat in Ayodhya

Every place to eat in Ayodhya is vegetarian, and most are simple and busy. Choose by where you will be standing when you get hungry: the temple lanes, Ram Path or the ghats.

Not sure what to order? The Ayodhya food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

Around the temples

The lanes below Hanuman Garhi are where breakfast happens. Stalls fry kachori and serve it with aloo sabzi from early morning, and the sweet shops sell the besan laddoo that pilgrims offer at the shrine. Shri Anand Bhojnalaya is a plain dining hall near Kanak Bhawan for a satvik thali or a kachori breakfast. Eat before you join the Ram Mandir line; once you are in it, there is no food for some time.

On Ram Path

Ram Ki Rasoi is a community kitchen near Ram Path that serves a free satvik meal to pilgrims at lunchtime. It runs on donations, so leave something if you eat there. Expect a queue, shared seating and a simple plate of dal, rice, roti and vegetables. The shops along Ram Path also sell snacks, lassi and sweets through the day.

By the river

Ananya Restaurant, near the ghats, is a sit-down vegetarian place for a longer meal after an evening at Ram ki Paidi. It is useful if you are travelling with older family and want a proper table and a menu.

Over in Faizabad

The old twin town of Faizabad has its own food streets, and Kaptan Ki Kachori is a long-running local name there for kachori and sabzi. It is worth the short drive if you are staying on that side or passing through the Ayodhya Cantt station.

Tips for eating well

Meals are cheap here, and every place listed is vegetarian. Lunch is the main meal at bhojnalayas, and some close between lunch and dinner. Bottled water is easy to find. On festival days, especially Ram Navami and Deepotsav, queues at every stall grow long, so carry a snack. The food guide explains each dish before you order.
