About Bekal Fort
Bekal Fort was built in about 1650 by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi and covers around 40 acres, making it the largest fort in Kerala. Its red laterite walls curve around a headland, and almost three-quarters of the fort faces the sea. Inside, you can see a stepped water tank, a tunnel opening towards the south, an old ammunition store and a broad flight of steps up to the observation tower, which is linked to Tipu Sultan.
The fort is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. A small Hanuman temple, the Mukhyaprana Temple, stands at the entrance. The walk along the sea walls is the highlight, with views over the waves and down to Bekal Beach, and the fort is also known as the setting for the song 'Uyire' from the film Bombay.
