About the Valiyaparamba Backwaters
The Valiyaparamba backwaters, also called the Kavvayi backwaters, are a long lagoon running parallel to the Arabian Sea between Kasaragod and Kannur districts. Four rivers feed the water, and it is dotted with islands, the largest of which, Valiyaparamba, gives the area its name. The island is about 10 km south of Nileshwar.
Most visitors explore the lagoon on a cruise from Kottappuram, passing coconut groves, fishing villages and narrow strips of land between the backwater and the sea. It is one of the quietest backwater areas in Kerala, and a slow half day on the water is the best way to see it.
