For darshan
The temple asks visitors to dress decently, and most pilgrims wear traditional clothes. For women, a saree, salwar kameez or long skirt with a covered top is ideal. For men, a dhoti or veshti, or trousers with a shirt, works well. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops and anything tight or see-through. For paid sevas such as the kalyanam or abhishekam, traditional dress is expected, so check with the temple office when you book.
Footwear
Shoes come off at the temple stand, and you walk barefoot across stone that gets hot by midday. Wear slip-on sandals you will not mind leaving. For hot days, carry socks if you plan to spend time in the outer courtyards.
For the river
Many pilgrims bathe at the Godavari ghats before darshan. Bring a change of clothes and a towel, and bathe in modest clothing. Changing rooms at the ghats are basic. Follow the safety ropes and any warning signs, because the current can be strong.
Out of town
For Parnasala and Kinnerasani, wear light cotton, closed shoes or sturdy sandals and a hat. Add mosquito repellent for the forested areas and the evenings.
Seasons
- October to February: warm days and mild nights. A light layer covers early-morning ghat visits in December and January.
- March to June: very hot, often above 40 °C. Sri Rama Navami often falls in this heat, so wear loose cotton and carry water.
- July to September: humid with heavy rain, and the Godavari can flood. Choose quick-dry clothes and sandals that can get wet.
Local dress
The Koya people of the surrounding forests have their own festive dress, with beadwork and feathered headgear. You will see it at tribal festivals and gatherings. Admire and ask before photographing, but do not wear it as a costume.
