Rama's town on the Godavari

Bhadrachalam is a small temple town on the north bank of the Godavari, in the forested southeast corner of Telangana. Almost everything here turns on one building: the Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple on a low hill above the river. In the 17th century, Kancherla Gopanna, a revenue official under the last Golconda sultan, rebuilt it. He is remembered as Bhakta Ramadasu. He spent state money on it and was jailed at Golconda for years. The story that Rama himself paid his debt to the sultan is told in every home here, and Ramadasu's songs are still sung in the temple.

What a visit looks like

Most pilgrims start at the Godavari ghats with a dip in the river. Then they climb the steps to the temple for darshan under the painted gateway towers. A second morning usually goes to Parnasala, about 32 km away. It is believed to be where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana lived in exile and where Sita was taken by Ravana. Nature lovers add the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary, about 40 km away near Palvancha.

The festival calendar decides your trip

Sri Rama Navami, in March or April, brings the celestial wedding of Rama and Sita, and it is the town's biggest day. The state government presents silk robes and rice mixed with pearls, and huge crowds fill the stadium built for the ceremony. Vaikuntha Ekadasi, in December or January, brings a night procession of the deities on a swan-shaped float on the Godavari. Come for these if you want the spectacle. Avoid them if you want a quiet darshan and an easy room.

Getting there

Bhadrachalam is about 310 km from Hyderabad, and the drive takes six to seven hours. The nearest railway station is Bhadrachalam Road at Kothagudem, about 40 km away. Most visitors stay one or two nights, and rooms near the temple fill quickly at weekends and on festival days.

Food and dress

The food is plain Telugu fare: pulihora, gongura, ragi sangati and the temple's own prasadam. See what to eat. Dress traditionally and modestly for the temple, and wear shoes you can slip off.
