About Keoladeo National Park
Keoladeo National Park, also called Keoladeo Ghana or the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a man-made wetland on the southern edge of Bharatpur. It began as a royal duck-hunting reserve, became a national park in 1982 and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Around 370 bird species have been recorded here.
In winter, ducks, geese, pelicans, cranes and waders arrive from Central Asia and further north, while resident storks, herons and cormorants nest in the trees after the monsoon. Private vehicles are not allowed inside, so visitors explore the flat paths on foot, by bicycle or in a cycle-rickshaw with a trained guide. The water comes from the monsoon and from releases into the park, so bird numbers vary from year to year.
